About this video

In this short clip from one of Robert Simic's coach trainings, a man in the training room works with Robert on a pain in his head that he links to his teeth, and describes what he notices as it changes.

Robert opens with an idea he's held for years: a headache isn't a thing that occupies the head but a process happening within it. If we treat it as a thing, he says, we look outside ourselves to get rid of it. If we see it as a process, we might learn about our own body and mind instead.

In the room, the man says the pain is mostly in his ear and rates it five or six out of ten. After a brief process with Robert, he describes it as suddenly released. He says some heaviness is still there in the area. Asked whether the pain is now zero, he says he wouldn't say one. He compares it to someone pushing and then the hand moving away. Robert closes with care. He says he isn't claiming this is possible for everybody, only that it happened for this one man, despite the man's own disbelief. What you see is one person's report in the moment. For any ongoing pain, keep working with your doctor or dentist.
